Otago win Uni Snow Games 06

Otago win Uni Snow Games 06

The biggest and best Uni Snow Games took place at the end of August in Wanaka. After week-long skiing and boarding competitions at Cardrona (and an afternoon at Snow Farm), the 2006 event ended in now traditional fashion with Otago University retaining their title as Snow Games Champions. 

The final placings were as follows: 
1st - University of Otago                    (758.97 points)
2nd - University of Canterbury           (298 pts) 
3rd - AUT University                           (132.66 pts)
4th - University of Auckland                (117.16 pts)
5th - Massey University Wellington     (76 pts)
6th - Lincoln University                       (48 pts)
7th - Massey University Albany            (30 pts)
8th - Victoria University of Wellington  (27.16 pts)
9th - University of Waikato                  (9 pts)

USNZ would like to thank Cardrona Ski Resort, the Southern Trust, Speights, E2 and other Uni Snow Games 06 sponsors, participants, and supporters in making this another successful event in 2006.

World Uni Champs 2006

11th World University Golf Championships
5-9 Sept - Torino, Italy

Recent Eisenhower Cup selection, David Gill (Waikato), was the best of the New Zealand golfers finishing 11th, 10 shots behind the Chinese Taipei winner, Chen-Chih Chiang. NZ professional Mike Hendry (AUT) was 13th with the men's team ending in 7th place. Amy Smith (Massey PN) was the best of the NZ women finishing 31st.

5th World University Canoe Wildwater Championships
7-10 Sept - Krakow, Poland

Michael Dawson (Massey PN), a 2005 NZU Blues recipient for Canoe/Kayak, finished 15th in the K1 slalom at the recent World Uni Wildwater Canoe Champs in Poland.

World Uni Winter Games - Torino 2007

World Uni Winter Games - Torino 2007

The 2007 World University Winter Games will be held 17-27 January in Torino, Italy.

USNZ has announced the selection of 11 Ski Racers and Snowboarders to represent New Zealand at the Games. They include former Olympian (Salt Lake 2002) and Otago student Jesse Teat who will carry the NZ flag into the opening ceremony.

At the last Games, the NZ team recorded 3 top 8 finishes, making 2005 the most successful to date. Over 2,500 competitors and officials from 55 nations are expected to compete in Torino in facilities recently built for last January's Winter Olympics.

Tertiary Challenges 2006

Tertiary Challenges 2006

USNZ recently staged the new Central and Southern region tertiary challenges - participatory events for all tertiary institutions.

Southern Tertiary Challenge - 8th Sept
Once known as the Mainland Games, the 2006 Southern TC was held at the University of Canterbury. 200 participants from 6 tertiary institutions competed in 7 sports (basketball, netball, indoor rowing, soccer, touch, ultimate and volleyball). The hosts, Canterbury, won the Southern Challenge Trophy. Click on Southern TC for full results.

Next year's event will be hosted by Otago University - see you in Dunedin!  Thanks to UC and UCSA staff for their assistance with this year's event.

Central Tertiary Challenge - 15th Sept
250 participants competed in 6 sports at Massey's excellent facilities at Palmerston North. The host team, Massey PN, won the Central Challenge Trophy - click on Central TC for full results.

Thanks to Massey and MUSA staff as well as to Sport Manawatu and Student City for their backing of the event which will be back in Palmie next year.

NZU Blues 2006 - Applications for 2006 national Blues will be available online from Wednesday 11 October - click on NZU Blues 06 for information. Closing date for completed applications is 1 Dec 06.

A welcome to Jessica Baldwin, an Otago graduate, who has started as the new Sports Co-ordinator at Auckland Student Movement (AuSM); and to Adele Adamson, the new Clubs Development Officer at Massey Albany who takes up post on 9 October.

The NZU Rugby League team (defending student world cup champions) will play Australian Universities in a curtain-raiser to the first Tri-Nations test at Mount Smart Stadium, Auckland, ko 4.50pm on Sat 14 October. They will also play a warm-up match against the NZ Army at Massey PN on Mon 9 October.

Congratulations to Waikato University for their victory in the 5th Great Race rowing challenge - the men's eight beat Cambridge University by 4 lengths to continue Waikato's impressive domination of the event.

Recent NZU Sportspersons of the Year have excelled at recent world events - 2004 winner Matthew Slade won gold by 1/100th of a second in the T37 200m at the recent IPC world athletics champs in the Netherlands. 2005 winner, George Bridgewater, won the silver medal with partner Nathan Twaddle in the pair at the World Rowing Champs in Eton, England in August.

Congratulations also to Anna Richards, 2005 NZU Blue, and a part of the victorious Black Ferns team in the recent World Cup in Canada. 

In Athletics, Kimberley Smith finished 2nd in the 26th annual Fifth Avenue road mile, New York with a time of 4m 30.3s, 2.3s behind Sarah Hall (States). Also, Mary Davies finished 3rd in the Oklahoma State University Cowboy Jamboree event, recording 17m 46s for the 5000m cross country event. Both athletics, being NZers studying at an overseas university, were 2005 NZU Outstanding Achievement Award recipients.

The South African Student Sports Union has annnounced that the 4th Student Rugby World Cup will take place in Stellenbosch in July 2007. New Zealand won the 1st world cup but has not taken part since.

Victoria University has won Debating's prestigious “Joynt Scroll” (the NZU Prepared Debating Champs) which took place at the end of August at the University of Auckland.

USNZ wishes to add its condolences following the death of All Black Brian Fitzpatrick last week. Fitzpatrick played for the Victoria University club side in 1952 when he first made the All Blacks squad. He played for NZ Universities in their famous victory over the Springboks at Athletic Park in 1956.
