Uni Games 07 launched in Christchurch
The 2007 Uni Games was officially launched at a ceremony at Christchurch City Council on Wednesday 29 November attended by national & local media, regional sports organisations, University team managers and key Games partners. The launch was addressed by representatives of USNZ’s Games partners including the Mayor of Christchurch, Garry Moore, the Deputy Vice Chancellor of the University of Canterbury, Prof Ian Town and Warren Poh, President of the University of Canterbury Students’ Association. The Launch coincided with the briefing for University team managers representing the 10 NZ teams competing at the Games as well as a representative from the University of the South Pacific who will be sending several teams from Fiji to compete at the event.

World University Winter Games 2007
By the time of the next Newz in February, over 2,600 competitors and officials from over 55 nations will have competed in the 23rd World University Winter Games being staged in Torino, Italy on 17-27 January 2007. The New Zealand team of 15, including 10 snowboard and ski racing competitors has now left NZ for training and competition in the northern hemisphere prior to the Games. World University Games 2007
USNZ and NZ Soccer have today announced the squad of 20 women’s players who will represent New Zealand in Bangkok at the 24th World University Games in August next year. The team will be captained by Jennifer Kendall, an Aucklander graduating from Otago University in December, and includes 7 players from the 2005 Games in Turkey where NZ secured a highest ever 9th place. Commonwealth & Olympic doctor Lynne Coleman and Hurricanes doctor Ian Murphy have been appointed as Health Team Leader and Chief Medical Officer to the NZ delegation respectively. The delegation is expected to be the largest ever with between 130-150 competitors and officials including 11-12 doctors, physiotherapists and massage therapists.

Rugby League
The NZU Rugby League side played 2 representative matches recently. They defeated the NZ Defence Force 24-10 on 9 October at Massey University in Palmerston North before narrowly losing a Tri-Nations test curtain-raiser to an Australian Tertiary side 22-26. The latter match was the final game for Victoria student Henry Heke, a NZU veteran who competed in both of the last 2 successful student world cup campaigns.

New Triathlon and Sailing events in 2007
USNZ has announced that it will offer 2 new NZU championships in 2007. The inaugural NZU triathlon champs will be held on Saturday 17 March in Whangamata as part of Triathlon NZ’s new national series event. A first NZU sailing (team racing) event will be staged in conjunction with Yachting NZ at Algies Bay, near Warkworth, in December 2007. For more information click on Uni Championships

Battle of the Bombays
The 18th Battle of the Bombays sporting contest between Waikato and Auckland Universities was held in Hamilton on 23rd September. Waikato emerged victorious for the 7th consecutive year retaining the Sir Don Llewellyn Shield.

In brief
Matthew McCormick, a NZU Blue and Auckand University Sportsman of the Year for 2005 & 2006, has been awarded a prestigious Woolf Fisher Scholarship which offers him the chance of postgraduate study at Oxford University. McCormick is one of NZ’s leading windsurfers and competed at the 2005 World University Games in Turkey, finishing 6th.

The Varsity Squash Club, Dunedin was recognised as the top squash club in New Zealand at the AGM of Squash NZ in Auckland on 17 November. John Harraway, club administrator, said that the award had given tremendous positive exposure for a club that had "risen from the ashes".
