Ingram wins sole NZ medal in Bangkok

Ingram wins sole NZ medal in Bangkok

Swimmer Melissa Ingram (Auckland University) was New Zealand's only medal winner at August's 24th World University Games in Bangkok. Ingram, clearly saving herself in narrowly qualifying for the A final of the 200m backstroke, claimed the silver medal despite swimming from lane 1.

The medal was the NZ highlight of a Games which reached Olympic standard in many sports. NZ swimmers and athletes broke 3 national records during the Games as well as many personal bests. The men's basketball team finished 15th out of 24 teams and the men's and women's golf teams both placed 10th.

The Games were the largest to date with over 10,000 accredited competitors and officials from 163 nations. New Zealand had its largest ever delegation of 112 athletes and officials competing in 9 of the 17 sports. The NZ Team received funding support from SPARC and the NZ Community Trust and was sponsored by global footwear company Crocs.

Staff changes

David Pearce, of Wellington, has been appointed the new Executive Director of USNZ. David is well known to USNZ through his previous work as Assistant Chef-de-Mission for the 2003 and 2005 World University Games to Korea and Turkey. David will bring with him an excellent mix of knowledge and experience – particularly from the sport sector, having worked in SPARC as High Performance Director and other sporting organisations.

--------------------------------------------

Jodi Thomas, of Australia, has been appointed the new National Events Manager of USNZ. Jodi, a graduate of the University of Technology in Sydney, most recently worked for NSW Surf Life Saving NSW where she is the Event Manager. The flagship event there sees her organise a 9000 competitor event and various other smaller events including an awards dinner – very much mirroring USNZ’s events.

David and Jodi will start in their new roles with USNZ on 10th and 12th of September respectively.

---------------------------------

USNZ would like to thank former USNZ employees, Jim Ellis (CEO, Equestrian NZ) and Jake Wilkins (Team Services Manager, New Zealand Olympic Committee) for their invaluable contribution that has now set USNZ on the map in the sporting and tertiary sector.

Tertiary Challenges

Tertiary Challenges

Northern Tertiary Challenge 2007 was held on Friday 17 August and saw 400 competitors converging on Unitec grounds. The Challenge hosted by the Unitec Student Union was a success for the Northern region.

It is with great regret that the Southern Tertiary Challenge 2007, which was due to be held in Dunedin on Friday 14 September, will not be a reality this year. Initial numbers coming in have been low to make the sporting event of significant value to those participating, e.g. having enough teams in enough sports to be competing against each other.

The Central Tertiary Challenge is staged to go on September 14th, Friday.
