Anna Richards crowned at Blues Awards

Triple Rugby World Cup champion Anna Richards (Massey University) has been awarded the prestigious NZ Universities Sportsperson of the Year title for 2006 in recognition of her performance in helping the Black Ferns win last year's Cup in Canada.

Richards' award was the climax of the recent NZU Blues Awards Ceremony held 29 June in the Great Hall at Massey University Wellington. USNZ awarded 66 Blues to many of NZ's top sportsmen and women, the highest number of awards since 1950.

The Rt Hon Justice Tom Gault, the first Kiwi to captain the Royal & Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews in 2006, and Jamie Fitzgerald entertained the large gathering with their speeches, the latter having recently become the first Kiwi to walk unsupported to the South Pole.

New Zealand retain Trans-Tasman Rowing title

The NZ Universities Rowing Team maintained NZ's proud record in their annual Trans-Tasman competition retaining the trophy despite a drawn three Test series held last week in Queenstown and Dunedin.

The strong Australian Universities team won both the lightweight categories (men's four and women's quad) but NZU prevailed in both the men's and women's Eights tying the overall result. NZ retained the trophy on the basis of their win in Sydney last year.

USNZ to widen membership base

At its recent AGM, the USNZ membership agreed to allow non-University tertiary students to participate in USNZ events and, subject to criteria, allow the representative bodies of these students to become members of USNZ. The constitutional changes, passed with near unanimity, were the result of 18 months analysis, debate and agreement. The full impact of these changes will not be seen for at least 5 to 10 years. It was agreed that any changes to membership will be deliberate and staggered.

USNZ President, Hamish Hopkinson, is delighted with the changes. “The Board has been driving a strategic review of the sector and see significant opportunities for university sport. University students currently represent around 35% of all tertiary students. We want to grow and expand, deliver more viable events and be a more effective partner to the tertiary sector and New Zealand sport.”

USNZ wishes to thank all those who participated in the consultation and contributed their views to the debate.
